The Wayfarer's Creed

Edwards and Mandatory Service

Posted on: 22 May 2007

Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards recently stated:

One of the things we ought to be thinking about is some level of mandatory service to our country, so that everybody in America _ not just the poor kids who get sent to war _ are serving this country.

This man better have some good plans to expand non-military service opportunities like the Peace Corps and Americorps.  I could accept this year of service, but only if these two programs are treated equally with the military forces.  And even if we didn’t have this mandatory service we sure should increase funding for these programs, because then we would be cutting down on the roots of war, eliminating war, and then we could cut our defense budget.
